Working with Fibers in a New Book

I have been working on a book project for an exhibit, Narrative Threads. Very intriguing concept to use threads as a primary element.

What do threads mean to us as an image, as a concept? I immediately think of these fine, thing connections between things, between my button and my collar for example. And yet, while whisper-thin, threads can be ultra strong. Try breaking a thread when you don’t have scissors around. They can be tenancious.

Threads makes me think of spider webs and the silken lines they spin from their bodies, attaching to the house siding, the fence post, the flower pot. The thin almost invisible web of threads captures the spider’s sustenance…it sustains life.

For a concept for my book I used the words of Scottish poet and author Robert Burns (1759-1796). He was also known as Rabbie Burns, the Bard of Ayrshire, Ploughman Poet and various other names and epithets. I took a number of his lines from various works and cut them apart and rearranged them. I wanted to create a new narrative from eternal ideas.

I used my own photos from Scotland to illustrate these ideas and included my own print work as well.

The outside container of the book is two hinged boards forming a box to hold the inner book. The book inside was constructed from an old book cover which I added threads that came from my Shibori dying, and a new book built inside.

I used paint, collage, stamping, embossing effects to create a new “old” book.
